Improving Interaction with the User in Cross-Language Question Answering through Relevant Domains and Syntactic Semantic Patterns

چکیده
The iCLEF 2004 experiment at the University of Alicante has focused on how to assist users in the localization of the correct answer in passages written in a language different from the one of the query. The language of the users is Spanish and the language of the documents/passages English. In order to help users, a first system shows, together with the passage in English, the relevant domains of the passage and the relevant domains of the query. These relevant domains were extracted automatically from WordNet Domains. A second system shows, together with the passage in English, the syntactic-semantic patterns (SSP) of each passage and the SSP of the query. The SSP are formed by the verb and the main nouns of a sentence (that is, the head nouns of the main complements). For users without deep knowledge or with low competence in English, our hypothesis is that to know the relevant domain and/or the SSP will be useful in order to find the correct answer in the passage. The results show that the SSP are few more better in the interaction with the users. However, some users said that it is more easy to find the answer knowing the relevant domains than through the SSP.

Automatic identification of words with semantic roles (such as Agent, Patient, Source, etc.) in sentences and attaching correct semantic roles to them, may lead to improvement in many natural language processing tasks including information extraction, question answering, text summarization and machine translation. Semantic role labeling systems usually take advantage of syntactic parsing and th...
متن کاملBoosting Passage Retrieval through Reuse in Question Answering
Question Answering (QA) is an emerging important field in Information Retrieval. In a QA system the archive of previous questions asked from the system makes a collection full of useful factual nuggets. This paper makes an initial attempt to investigate the reuse of facts contained in the archive of previous questions to help and gain performance in answering future related factoid questions. I...
متن کاملTopicalization in English Translation of the Holy Quran: A Comparative Study
The Holy Quran, as an Arabic masterpiece, comprises great domains of syntactical, phonological, and semantic literary patterns. These patterns work as the shackle of translators. This study examined the application of the most common shift strategies in Catford‟s linguistic model for translation of topicalization in chapter 29 of the Holy Quran. The topicalized cases were compared to their coun...
متن کاملNative-like Event-related Potentials in Processing the Second Language Syntax: Late Bilinguals
Background: The P600 brain wave reflects syntactic processes in response to different first language (L1) syntactic violations, syntactic repair, structural reanalysis, and specific semantic components. Unlike semantic processing, aspects of the second language (L2) syntactic processing differ from the L1, particularly at lower levels of proficiency. At higher L2 proficiency, syntactic violatio...
متن کاملOn Design of a Question-Answering Interface for Hindi in a Restricted Domain
The paper presents a schema for developing natural language interface for question-answering in Hindi in a specific domain and discusses issues involved therein. The system performs a shallow syntactic and semantic analysis of the input system. After identifying certain keywords in the query, the system triggers a reasoning process to determine the type of query and the answer slots that are re...
